Caring For Bedding

Hang your bedpillows on the clothesline whenever the weather permits. In all seasons! And your sheets, even in between washings.

Why?  There's no other household item you come so closely into daily contact with for such a length of time. Hair, skin cells, skin oil, pet dander, microbes, bacteria, perspiration, and saliva all deposit on the pillow. It's an under-appreciated workhorse!

Just washing the pillowcase isn't enough to sanitize pillows. Exposing them to sunlight and wind will naturally 'bleach, sanitize and refresh' them. I can't prove it, but I firmly believe you sleep better with refreshed pillows; the sun and air linger inside and have a soothing effect.

Mattress Care
At least twice a year I haul our mattresses outside onto the deck; exposing them to the sun and wind. This kills microbes, mites and bacteria. I use a tennis racket to beat the surface (much as you do with rugs)  If it weren't so cumbersome I'd do this with all my upholstered furniture too.  It is a great way to eliminate dust and odor build up. It used to be common for mattresses to be two-sided, therefore flippable.  Now mattresses are often made one sided, so it is even more imperative to routinely vacuum and clean them.

The airing of Stuffed Animals
Sun and Wind cleaning works (between washings) for your children's dolls and stuffed animals too. Get your children in the habit of such care and it will be a natural process they bring into adulthood.

The airing of Bedding is a common practice in many cultures. Can it be that such practices aid in the overall health of the people?  It makes sense.
